Sizing oversized and fitted cuts

Why your usual size may not be the right start, and what to measure instead.

Letters are not measurements

A medium has no fixed size. Gymwear labels cut for different bodies and different looks, and a label’s oversized tee is meant to run large, so sizing up can overshoot the look.

Measure a piece you already like, flat on a table: chest from armpit to armpit, and length from the shoulder to the hem. Compare those numbers with the garment measurements a label publishes, when it does.

Bottoms and bras

Leggings depend on waist and hips more than on height, though many labels list inseam lengths. Sports bras are often sold by letter, and those with band and cup sizes follow the label’s own chart. The size guide on this site lists common conversions as a starting point.
