What compression means on a label

A word on a tag, a tighter knit, and what to check before you buy.

A tight fit, by design

Compression clothes are knit with a high share of elastane so they hold close to the body. The word has no single standard on sportswear, so one label’s compression top may be another’s fitted top.

Medical compression garments are different: they are graded by measured pressure. A training top is not a medical product, and a shop’s claims about recovery or performance are the shop’s own.

How to choose

Read the fabric share. More elastane generally means more stretch and hold. Then read the size chart closely, because these cuts leave little room between sizes, and between two sizes many labels suggest the larger if the garment feels restrictive.

If you plan to wear it under other clothes, check the seams. Flat seams sit better under a layer.
